Game Composer

Nikita Melnikov

I write music for games — mostly small, strange and very particular ones.

I came to game music after years of playing bass, writing songs and recording with a band. I started by composing for game jams, then wrote the soundtracks for Robot Detour and Burn With Me (both by Nozomu Games). Game jams are still a big part of what I do.

Outside music, I work in graphic and editorial design. I tend to think about hierarchy, rhythm, consistency, empty space and whether every element actually needs to be there.

I write my music myself, without generative AI. It starts in my head, and sometimes keeps a few rough edges or unexpected turns. I increasingly value those small imperfections — they make the music feel human.

I like small games with a strong personality, and figuring out what music belongs in them.

Come hear what I mean

Burn With Me is a story-driven occult deckbuilder by Nozomu Games. It started as a three-day prototype for Ludum Dare 55. The prototype ranked 15th out of 1,650 rated entries in Fun and 32nd Overall. The game was later nominated for the 2026 German Computer Game Award in the Best Prototype category. I composed the music for both the original game-jam prototype and the full game.

Game release: .

I designed the musical system around the structure of the game itself. Each chapter follows a different student and has its own signature instrument. This gives every character a distinct musical identity.

Some instruments return across chapters and connect the separate stories. One of the main motifs has been part of the score since the original game-jam prototype.

In each chapter, the music follows the story. It starts with sparse, minimalist dark jazz. As the tension grows, more layers come in. By the boss sequences, the music is dense and powerful.

I wanted the music to feel uneasy, but also warm. Angelo Badalamenti’s music for Twin Peaks and the dark jazz of Bohren & der Club of Gore were big inspirations.

“The supernatural horror also comes with jazz influences rather than relying entirely on the usual droning basement noises, Gregorian chanting, and somebody dragging industrial cookware across a concrete floor. Thank you. Occultism can have rhythm.”

Robot Detour

Robot Detour is a short puzzle game by Nozomu Games about a little wired robot who delivers batteries to its wireless friends. Its cable is the starting point for playful spatial puzzles across six worlds. Each world adds new mechanics and twists.

Released on , the game has received 100% positive reviews from 177 Steam purchasers.

For Robot Detour, I wanted to keep the instrumental palette small. All six worlds needed to feel like parts of the same little mechanical universe. But each one also needed its own personality.

The bass guitar keeps things moving and connects the rhythm with the melody. A bright electronic keyboard stands in for the robot. Its arpeggiator sounds mechanical, but also playful and a little cute. Simple synthetic drums add to that feel. Shaker and woodblock sometimes break it up. Marimba appears across the score too, with a curious, slightly mysterious sound that felt right for a puzzle game.

Players might spend several minutes on a single puzzle, so the music had to give them room to think. I wanted it to help them get into a flow state. At the same time, I didn’t want another “10 hours of lo-fi hip-hop to study to” playlist. The tracks are mostly restrained. Now and then, an unexpected rhythm, chord or melody brings a small surprise and pulls the listener back into the game.

For one of the secret levels, I also arranged and produced Starving for Love, a full vocal eurobeat song composed by Varvara Fukalova.
